If you would like to become an expert in search engine optimization, you will need to understand couple of things. First of all, you will need to undestand factors within the website that affect it’s rankings. Its normally things like meta and title tags, H1 and H2 headings, keyword density and linking structure (follow/nofollow). Secondly, you will need to understand how incoming links affect work, where they should come from and where they should point to.

So, if you can do this well, then there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to optimize a website and make it better than it currently is. The biggest problem that usually happens is that when someone wants to rank for a very competitive keywords and wants results asap. In that case its virtually impossible to do SEO as it might take a while.
